Pike Twitching: the Right Setup for Minnow Jerkbaits
Twitching is the art of making a minnow wobbler dart, slash and pause like a dying baitfish — and it is brutally effective on pike. But the technique is unforgiving of the wrong tackle: a soft rod turns sharp jerks into lazy wobbles, and a heavy rod destroys your wrist after an hour. The setup is everything.
The classic twitching rod is 6'6"–7'2", 10–35 g, extra-fast action with a responsive tip and powerful mid-section. Japanese 'jerkbait' blanks (Major Craft, Graphiteleader) are built exactly for this: they load on a short wrist snap and recover instantly, so the lure dances instead of dragging. A 2500 reel with a 6.2:1 ratio picks up slack fast between jerks.
Braid PE 0.8–1.2 transmits every twitch without stretch — on mono, half your rod work evaporates before it reaches the lure. Work 90–130 mm suspending minnows with jerk-jerk-pause rhythms, and be ready: pike hit on the pause, hard, often at the rod tip. A titanium or thick fluoro leader survives the aftermath.
